race in the katrina aftermath, and they say that nobody has even seen it before, but here's a speech they're talking about. we're going to take a look at it. it is june of 2007. then senator barack obama speaking at the university of virginia. looks like, of course, it was recorded at a stf have tv station, and that tv station, a cnn affiliate, and cnn covered a lot of the networks covered, as a matter of fact. it was not recently dug up, and it is not new. joe johns is watching the story very closely from washington. joe, first of all, in covering the candidate, i know it's not new. i mean, we all saw this speech. we covered it, and we covered the whole issue of reverend wright. very extensively with the president and even with the first lady in putting many questions to them about this. what's the fuss? >> well, suzanne, you know and i know this is a political year. it could be -- thinking they have an exclusive, running with it as soon as they saw it. either way safe to say, yes, this is old news. the reason it gets attention from conservative -- it's really -- he has never fully
prepared remarks talking about how he says victims of katrina got shortchanged by the bush administration. >> what happened down in new orleans? where's your dollar? makes no sense. tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out. tells me that somehow the people down in new orleans, they don't care about as much. >> hannity then played this clip. >> we don't need to build more highways out in the suburbs if we have people in the cities right now who want to work but have no way to get to those jobs. >> hannity then came out and said this. >> this is what so-called unbiased journalists have been trying to hide for years, a glimpse into the mind of the real barack obama. and it's one that all americans need to pay close attention to. >> did journalists hide that? our research shows they did not. we dug into cnn's archives and found references in our coverage to the portion of the speech where obama talks about new orleans. this was on paula zahn's program the night before the speech. >> now nearly two years after hurricane katrina hit new orleans, obama insists our country still ignores communit
for barack obama of george bush's flying over katrina moment. >> but nothing was said at all. and nothing will be said. >> with us now is mr. caddell. so you think this is an organized press suppression of this story? >> well, organized -- whether it's organized is a straight conspiracy, everyone is in on it and doing it and it's a purposeful conscious effort to suppress news that might help obama. we have gone down a slippery slope here. look, bill, we have had liberal bias or bias in the press for a long time. for many years. but it's gotten worse starting in 2008. now we have a press that actively engages in the re-election. putting out a narrative that romney is a loser, you know running polls, they are using like telling n.i.v. adding on romney. romney is not my issue here. not only decide to sup obama on thisss the last two weeks, what we see is a press that has decided that it will not tell the american people the truth. not only tell people oho they may or mayot vote for but now telling people what truth they may know and what truth they may not know. >> what is the truth? look, w

made some comments about resources, he made some comments about federal response to katrina. i mean, it's just a damp squid and i don't think that -- i think if you look at most of the media today, outside of the one that chose to highlight that particular story, not many people are paying it much attention because it is really frankly not worth much attention. what's new about it? you tell me, tamron. >> nothing new about it. i thought you were going to compare to al capone's vault, a big television special here in the states. >> no, no, hitler's die ritz were better. hitler's diaries were better.are better. hitler's diaries were better. urge i have to switch you around to congressman ryan's tape the "huffington post" revealed where he is talking about 70% of american public want the american dream while 30% want welfare and look to welfare this is being compared to romney's 47% comment. is that a fair camp pairson there? >> well, i think you have to give mitt romney and paul ryan a great deem of credit. they are consistently ar r lyco matically wrong. they can't decide how much of the
response to katrina, which many other people have given. we also see an attempt to use reverend wright to attack the president, which has failed before, but because it's failed before doesn't mean we shouldn't try it once again. stepping back, we see hannity and tucker carlson critiquing the president's accent and his tone of voice. so we have two white men who don't know the president talking about how he should speak, how a black person should speak in public, especially when they are talking to other black people, which is a really disgusting part of this whole thing and tleepsd this whole attempt to try to portray him, once again, as a scary black man who is really out for black people. he is ultimately malcolm x, that is who he is, we see him behind closed doors, which is entirely untrue. the country doesn't believe that at all. joan walsh picked up on this part of it today earlier in her piece of salon. this is the most rancid racial fear mongering i've seen in a long time. that's all this really is. >> i was gonna let toure keep going there, we were talking about salon, my polic

a different speaking style than usual, obama charged new orleans, post-hurricane katrina, was supposed to get disaster from the stafford fund. a requirement waived for other disaster victims. >> when 9/11 happened in new york city, they waived the stafford act. said this is too serious a problem. we can't expect new york city to rebuild on its own. >> reporter: same with hurricane andrew in florida, he said. but -- >> what's happening down in new orleans? there's your dollars? where's your stafford act money? makes no sense. tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out. tells me that somehow, the people down in new orleans, they don't care about as much. >> reporter: beyond the accuracy of the charge, critics say the president was divisively pandering to a black crowd, by suggesting malicious discrimination against new orleans. >> people in washington, they wake up, they're surprised. there's poverty in our midst. folks are frustrated. black people, angry. >> reporter: the video also features obama extolling his then-reverend, jeremiah wright. >> a guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens t
